Dreamfall Chapters is the follow-up to award-winning adventures The Longest Journey and Dreamfall: The Longest Journey. It is a story about choices and consequences, dreams and reality, magic and science, chaos and order. Dreamfall Chapters is a modern 3D adventure that lets you explore over 50 breathtaking locations across three unique worlds.

Dreamfall Chapters  brings back the core team behind Dreamfall: The Longest Journey, including Ragnar Tørnquist, creator of the series. It is an exciting story-driven adventure for PC/Mac/Linux and next-generation consoles. Dreamfall Chapters follows three characters on their journeys across two worlds — one a cyberpunk vision of the future, the other a magical fantasy world — as explores how their stories and destinies intertwine.  Dreamfall Chapters concludes the Dreamer Cycle and the gripping story of Zoë, the Dreamer.

In February 2013, Red Thread Games turned to Kickstarter to fund production of the game with an initial goal of $850,000. One month later, they exceeded their wildest dreams by receiving almost twice that: an incredible $1.5 million! Through the amazing generosity and support of their fans, and with additional funding by the Norwegian Film Institute, they were finally able to begin work on the game. Dreamfall Chapters is divided into thirteen chapters and five books. Each chapter is designed for a single gameplay session — much like an episode of a TV show — and each book is designed to have a beginning, middle and end; a story arc within the greater story arc. The game was originally released in episodic format, with five episodes, one for each book, and you can now buy the complete Dreamfall Chapters saga.

It’s easy to tell Red Thread Games believes video games are the ultimate medium for telling engaging stories. The story of Dreamfall Chapters is a fundamental and integral part of the gameplay, rather than just the backdrop. Through exploration, discovery and dialogue, via choices and actions, players connect emotionally with their worlds and characters. The main downfall of this game is the mechanics and controls. While testing the game on Mac it was easier to play with a cursor, while console controllers seem like you’re operating with a handicap.

Dreamfall Chapters give players the opportunity to shape your own journey through the game. Throughout the game you become wrapped up in a uniquely personal and deeply affecting story, with  surprising and sometimes devastating repercussions. And, like any good story, Dreamfall Chapters is best experienced with other people — good friends or family sitting next to you on the couch, acquaintances or total strangers playing the game elsewhere and sharing their choices and stories with you — and they’ve built the game and story with that experience in mind.

While playing the game, you follow two unlikely heroes on their journeys across worlds to save the very fabric of reality from the Undreaming. Dreamfall Chapters is a dark, magical and heartbreaking adventure that will on a quest you’ll never forget. With a brand new storyline and a fresh cast of characters, Dreamfall Chapters introduces new players to The Longest Journey saga, while returning players will get the conclusion they have been waiting for since the end of The Longest Journey. This review is based on the enhanced console Final Cut edition, which includes some special features:

  •  All 5 Episodes of the game with a total of 13 Chapters
  • Reworked character models, improved animations, lightning and special effects
  • Introduces a new cast of characters – including three playable characters

Dreamfall Chapters is a story about the broken heroes whose actions will shape the course of history. In the game, you delve into a deep and involved storytelling experience, where two characters separated by parallel universes, will shape the fate of all worlds.Their journeys will connect and intersect, and, through their eyes, players will explore parallel realities, experience a deep and gripping storyline, and meet a diverse and colorful cast of characters. You must work to uncover the secret behind a dreaming disease that threatens to tear reality to pieces.  Mature, emotional and challenging, Dreamfall Chapters is a game invites you to forge your own path in a story where magic meets science and dreams meet reality.

With this latest game in the saga, Red Thread Games achieves recapturing the heart and soul of The Longest Journey and improves on the immersion and game mechanics of Dreamfall. The end result is a fitting, satisfying, exciting and emotional game set in a broken and decaying dreamscape.  To catch up on the story so far, watch the video below.
